About this deal

I really enjoyed the first 5 issues of the book, with King crafting a great noir set in Gotham with everything you would want: hard boiled crime, damsels, smoking guns, and double and triple crossings. This comic is as visually hard-boiled as they come, so if you're in the mood for rough detectives stalking the mean streets of a city gone sour, you'll enjoy the art. Set in 1961, it’s supposedly the last era of the city before it became the perpetually crime-ridden nightmare we all know and love. Also, one of my least favorite Batman continuity implants was having Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas, wearing a Batman costume the Halloween before his death. This early clue suggests that a Wayne wrote the letters and that Batman's bat symbol was in his family long before his birth.

For now I will say that King’s writing style fits the noir aesthetic he’s going for, but that praise is dependent on future issues having less constant narration and more diegetic storytelling. Tom King continues his storied time with the Batman mythos with a descent into the titular city’s deep, dark and bloody history that lays the foundations of the Wayne family’s symbiotic relationship with Gotham while also telling a very human tragedy in the classic noir fashion. The final reveal about what happened to Helen hurts worse than any of the other accusations and theories throughout the book.If the premise of Gotham City: Year One was to change Bruce's family tree, then all I can say is why? Jordie Bellaire’s colors really shine here, as stark, pale depictions of Slam highlight the reds of the fire and blood.

The world is on fire, death has happened, and the detective with too big a heart needs to find some justice. Like how the whole situation affected the black community, did Slam do anything or just pontificated the whole time. The comic fell onto my desk like a sledge hammer coming down on a boulder – no one could tell you how exactly it would end up, but it was definitely going to leave a mark.

Constance becomes the heir to Wayne Enterprises with a single bullet, and Sam is powerless to expose her. King is just not Brubaker, but I it was interesting to read about Bruce Wayne's grandparents and how they amassed their fortune. Dawson's murder occurs at Richard's new industrial refinery, highlighting that Richard's profitable business began with blood.

It’s extremely satisfying to see him gone after painfully experiencing all the problems he’s caused.

The story is set up like a classic film noir, complete with grizzled narration and a dame walking into the protagonist’s office to kickstart the plot. It’s an effective use of visual storytelling to convey to the reader without words what the protagonist learns. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It's great that the author includes a warning textbox to prepare everyone for the horrendous things going on in this comic. Twenty percent of the story is people beating each other to a bloody pulp, yet a naked butt in the shower is censored by a word balloon. Some might cite her explanation as a mother's intuition, but when the other evidence is present, the timing of her visit is too suspicious to ignore. Don't worry though, because if that bothers you like it bothered me, it'll go away by 3rd issue at the most.
